[Houston Fire Department]

HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Local and federal investigators are looking into a deadly helicopter crash that killed four people, including a child, in Houston Sunday night.

The chopper slammed into a radio tower near the downtown area just before 8 p.m.

Speaking at a Sunday night press conference; Houston Mayor John Whitmire said despite the carnage, the crash could have caused even more destruction.

“We are fortunate that it wasn’t worse in terms that there was a butane tank, gas tank, near the crash scene,” he said.

Authorities know where the helicopter came from but there not sure where it was headed.

“The preliminary information that we’re getting is that it came from Ellington Field and that it either struck a cable or it struck the tower,” said Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz. Ellington Airport is about 15 miles south of Houston.

Officials are asking residents not to pick up any debris from the crash.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of kin.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are assisting Houston police and fire in the investigation.
