WAXAHACHIE (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A North Texas community is raising money for the family of the man who drowned while trying to save a teen in Lake Waxahachie over the weekend.
Waxahachie police said first responders received a call about a drowning near Boat Dock Park around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.
Bystanders told police and fire crews the group out of Garland had been enjoying the water after participating in several baptisms.
21-year-old Lincer Mejia Lopez, who had just been baptized, lost his life as he swam out to try and rescue a teenage girl in distress in the lake.
A nearby boater from Red Oak pulled the girl out of the water. She survived after CPR was performed and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Lopez’ body was pulled from the water and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to a GoFundMe campaign, Lopez was the oldest of seven siblings and the money will be used to help his family pay for funeral expenses.
“We ask for your help from the community and friends of the Mejia Lopez Family, we need to raise funds to transport his body to Chiapas Mx, his hometown where his loved ones await him,” said the GoFundMe statement.
