McLendon-Chisolm Dam Deemed Safe, No Evacuations Needed

ROCKWALL COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Residents in the the city of McLendon-Chisolm in Rockwall County are breathing a sigh of relief less than 24 hours after receiving a notice to be ready to evacuate Sunday evening.

The move came as city officials monitor the status of the dam in the Chisolm Crossing subdivision. The pond the dam holds back is about four feet above where it should be, according to officials.

McLendon-Chisolm Mayor Bryan McNeal said the ground near the dam shifted six feet in almost 24 hours.

On Monday morning, city officials brought in a state expert who assessed the dam’s safety. He found the damage was on the outside and the inside was deemed structurally sound.

The warning affected those who live on Fireside Drive, Parade Point, Granite Ridge Road, Highwater Crossing and Stampede Run.

Residents who live downstream on Brushy Creek were also on notice.

Mayor McNeal said a plan to pump the water was scrapped after getting the “all clear” from state officials, but assured residents they’ll be watching the area closely as the dam gets repaired.

“The homes that we’re monitoring are probably about 25 to 30 homes. So, I would say that stretch goes from at least Fireside it can go under 550 into the other side of Chisolm Crossing as well,” he said.

Sunday’s heavy rain exacerbated the situation and some residents have pond water flooding their backyards.

“Where you see the right iron fence, going up to about the pool fence line, that was yard. Now, it’s ocean-front property is what we’re saying,” said Mayor McNeal.

Work is underway to fix the issues along the dam.
