FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A Fort Worth police officer is recovering after being injured in an overnight shootout.
It happened just after 8 p.m. Sunday along the 4800 block of Miller Avenue just south of Highway 287 in southeast Fort Worth.
According to a news release, the officer spotted a vehicle believed to have been involved in a separate shooting Saturday night.
Before the officer put the squad car’s lights on, police said witnesses told detectives the suspect got out of his car, put his hands up and started firing at the officer.
Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said the suspect’s actions was cowardly.
“He came out as if he was giving up and pulled a gun as officer getting out of the car and shot at him multiple times. Forcing my officer to protect his own life and all the residents around here and fired back,” he said.
The officer managed to dodge the bullets but suffered minor injuries from flying debris from the patrol car.
Chief Noakes said despite the flying bullets and chaos, the officer jumped in his squad car and chased the suspect for about a mile until his patrol car stopped.
“He’d believed he’d been shot…he’d believed he’d taken gunfire because there were so many rounds came. He had glass that had hurt him. But even though he thought he’d been shot he continued to go after him. These are the kinds of people in the Fort Worth Police Department that go out and serve every day and every night,” he said.
Responding officers continued to chase the suspect’s car into a neighboring city.
The suspect was eventually arrested. No word yet on his identity or what charges will be filed.
