NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A North Texas judge sentenced a Bedford woman to nine years in prison this week in a murder-for-hire plot involving Bitcoin.
Federal prosecutors said 58-year-old Michelle Murphy searched the dark web to find a hitman to kill her boyfriend’s lover.
She allegedly used an ATM to convert cash to cryptocurrency at least three times and transferred about $10,510 to the hitman’s bitcoin wallet on July 27, 2023, according to a release by the U.S. Attorney’s Office Northern District of Texas.
Prosecutors said the person who accepted the money tipped of the Department of Homeland Security last August.
Authorities subsequently confronted Murphy and her boyfriend.
After her arrest, prosecutors said Murphy confessed and told investigators she was outraged when she found out her boyfriend had been seeing another woman and hatched a plan to kill her.
She was charged in September and plead guilty to one count of murder-for-hire in December.
The prosecution and defense agreed it appeared the “hitman” who accepted the money never intended to carry out the murder.
