DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A Dallas police officer is recovering at Methodist Hospital after being shot during while working a covert operation near early Thursday morning.
Investigators said officers spotted a car driving erratically in the 3200 block of Easter Avenue just south of East Kiest Boulevard around 12:45 a.m..
As the officers followed the car, police say someone in the suspect’s vehicle fired several shots into their unmarked car and a chase ensued. The bullet went through a side door and hit an officer in the hip.
Chief Eddie Garcia says the officer and is in stable condition.
“He is in great spirits and I just tweeted out the first question out of his mouth was ‘Did we catch ’em?” That’s a warrior right there,” he said.
After the chase, police initially detained five suspects but only two are facing charges and one is still on the run.
17-year-old Jaheart Nickelberry is charged with Aggravated Assault, Evading Arrest/Detention – Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Robbery, Theft.
Police also arrested a 15-year-old female and charged her with Evading Arrest/Detention.
Investigators are looking into the details behind what led up to the shooting.
“Two guns were recovered, one from the vehicle and another thrown from the suspect vehicle,” said Chief Garcia.
Police said their investigation determined that the car the suspects were driving in was stolen. No officers fired their weapons.
Two suspects were taken to the hospital, one for chest pain and the other for non-life threatening injuries.
