(WBAP/KLIF) — Republican South Carolina Senator Tim Scott is questioning whether the Treasury Department is acting in a “Big Brother” capacity.
George Orwell’s 1949 novel “1984” depicted a character known as Big Brother, a leader who used omnipresent government surveillance to spy on citizens. Now, the U.S. Treasury Department is accused of committing similar breaches of privacy. Scott is questioning Department of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen over allegations of infringing on the privacy rights of Americans.
Rob Collins is the CEO of credit card company Coign and says Senator Scott sent a letter to Yellen regarding the department seeking customer information from the nation’s largest banks and credit card companies. Collins believes if the requests are true, it represents a flagrant violation of privacy and improperly targets U.S. citizens.
Collins says the Treasury Department’s request involved Americans that were identified using terms such as “Trump” or “MAGA”. The government also asked for information on citizens who purchased guns at Cabela’s or Dick’s Sporting Goods. Those who purchased religious items were also targeted.
