Space Heater Claims Young Girl’s Life

VALLEY VIEW (WBAP/KLIF) – A space heater is being investigated as the source of a home fire causing the death of a 7 year old girl. A GoFundMe Account has been set up for the uninsured family, many of whom suffered burns trying to save her.

A woman identifying herself as aunt of 7 year old Delena Zuniga said the family was inside their rented mobile home when the fire broke out. Delena had taken a space heater into her room to sleep because it was cold; they did not have central heat. Savannah Darby said a nephew tried to wake up the family, but the fire was “going pretty well’ by the time the girl’s father was able to try to reach her and pull her out. He’s reported to have suffered severe burns.

Reports say the father went outside to use a hose, but the hose was frozen. Two other boys suffered burns to hands; Delena’s mother suffered smoke inhalation and all of the victims were/are being treated at Parkland Hospital.

Valley View ISD is collecting clothing, shoes, and gift cards for the family at the Valley View Elementary School office. A GoFundMe account has been set up to try to help the family to recover as well:
