TARRANT COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A Richland Hills man learned his fate for killing his 8-year-old grandson on New Year’s Day 2023.

A Tarrant County judge sentenced 63-year-old Phillip Hughes to 35 years in prison.

The body of Brenym McDonald was found riddled with stab wounds in his Richland Hills home on Labadie Drive just north of Baker Boulevard.

Richland Hills police said the child lived there with his grandfather and other relatives.

After police received a call from someone inside the home about the gruesome discovery, officers arrested Hughes about a block away from the scene.

McDonald was a student in Birdville ISD. In a GoFundMe post, Brenym was described as a smart, enthusiastic child with a big heart.

“There wasn’t a single room he couldn’t light up with a smile, or a story he couldn’t tell you that would make you laugh,” wrote family friend Maddox Sullivan.

Richland Hills police have not released information about a motive behind the murder.
