(WBAP/KLIF) – The Justice Department is suing Texas over a new law, Senate Bill 4, that would allow police to arrest migrants who are suspected of entering the U.S. illegally.
But longtime Florida immigration lawyer, Renata Castro, says governors do not have the power to implement it.
“That is the exclusive power of the federal government,” Castro says. “And it just makes immigrants, both those in the country legally and without status, feel unsafe about where they can lead a more law abiding life.”
The law also gives judges the authority to order migrants to leave the county.
But like Castro, the Biden Administration says immigration-related matters come under federal jurisdiction.
Governor Greg Abbott says he feels as though the Biden Administration is not protecting the border. This comes after illegal crossing along the southern boarder reached nearly 10,000 people a day in December.
