Flight Attendants Holiday Strike Blocked by National Mediation Board

(WBAP/KLIF) — A potential airline strike during the holidays has been averted.

APFA President Julie Hedrick leads a potential strike picket at DFW Airport on behalf of American Airlines flight attendants. August 2023.

The National Mediation Board (NMB) ruled, Tuesday, that flight attendants embroiled in a contract dispute with American Airlines were not cleared to go on strike over the Christmas holiday. Fort Worth-based American is proposing to match Delta’s decision last year to pay their flight attendants during boarding.

Association of Professional Flight Attendants President Julie Hedrick says her members are frustrated with the NMB’s decision to prevent a strike by rejecting a request from the union to strike. The NMB, instead, directed the APFA to continue negotiations with the airline averting a strike during the holidays. American released a statement saying the airline “looks forward to continued negotiations with APFA and reaching an agreement our flight attendants have earned”.

American Airlines is currently offering an 11% pay raise, while the APFA is asking for a 35% hike.
