(WBAP/KLIF) — Time is running out for American Airlines to offer a contract to its flight attendants. The airline’s flight attendant’s union says they feel slighted by company executives after risking their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to keep the airline flying.
They also voiced concern over watching record profits during 2023, only to see million dollar bonuses given to airline executives, while they worked for wages negotiated in 2014. Erik Harris works for the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) and says union members picketed outside of company headquarters in Fort Worth, Thursday afternoon, demanding a pay raise, better scheduling, and increased benefits.
American Airlines has until Friday, November 17th, to bring an offer to the table, otherwise the APFA may request to be released from negotiations in order to organize a strike. Harris explains that if they are released from negotiations by the National Mediation Board (NMB), they would be required to wait 30 days before being allowed to continue the process before a strike. If the entire process rides its course, flight attendants could walk off the job during the Christmas travel season.
Meanwhile American Airlines released a statement saying they are confident an agreement will be reached.
