LEWISVILLE (WBAP/KLIF News ) -After two decades in Congress, longtime GOP Representative Doctor Michael Burgess announced on Monday he will not seek re-election next year.
The 72-year-old first won the seat in 2002 and has held the 26th District of Texas, a heavily Republican seat in parts of Cook, Denton and Wise Counties without facing serious competition.
In a statement, the Lewisville Republican said “After spending nearly three decades practicing medicine in North Texas, it is the honor of my life to represent my friends an neighbors in the United States Congress.”
Burgess, who sits on the House Budget and Rules Committees, became a key GOP voice on health issues.
He was also a part of GOP efforts to unwind the Affordable Healthcare Act known as “Obamacare.”
The doctor one chaired the House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s Subcommittee on Health.
Burgess is the latest high profile politician from North Texas to announce major election news.
Last month, U.S. Representative Kay Granger, the first female mayor of Fort Worth and GOP woman in Congress, announced that she will not seek re-election after first winning her seat in 1997.
