TRAVIS COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A Travis County district judge granted a temporary injunction order blocking the Texas Education Agency from releasing updated accountability ratings, which assign A through F letter grades to schools and districts.
The A-F ratings are based on several factors including graduation rates, college, career and military readiness outcomes and State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness results.
Judge Catherine Mauzy of the 419th District Court ruled the planned implementation of the new system “violates Texas law and cause irreparable harm” to districts statewide.
The court heard arguments in the case earlier this month.
The move comes after several school districts filed a lawsuit claiming the agency did not give them enough notice about the changes, arguing that the new standards could potentially lead to lower scores even if performances improved.
The state can legally take over a school district if it ranks low enough for an extended period of time.
The TEA said it will appeal the decision. Several North Texas school districts joined the lawsuit including Dallas, Fort worth and Plano ISDs.
More than 100 school districts statewide sued the TEA over the the new system.
