Wanted Tow Truck Driver Surrenders in Connection with Deadly Crash

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – The suspect wanted in a deadly hit and run in Dallas last week turned himself Monday.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office says that 25-year-old Juan Francisco Garcia surrendered to authorities after they issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with an early morning crash on Aug 12 that killed 25 year Donald Collins.

In a press statement this morning, the DCSO said:

Dallas County Sheriff’s Office Detectives with the Vehicle Crimes Unit (VCU) identified the suspect that was driving the wrecker at the time of the initial accident on Saturday, August 12, at 2:28 AM, eastbound Interstate 30 at 2nd Ave., The VCU detectives obtained warrants for the suspect and he turned himself in Monday evening.  The great tips that the Vehicle Crime Unit Detectives received from community members from the coverage by the media, lead to the recovery of the wrecker and then the identity of the suspect.

Collins had exited his vehicle on i-30 near 2nd Ave. to help a mother and her young son whose van was hit by a tow truck driven by Garcia, according to police, who kept going.

Another vehicle driven by a drunk driver hit Collins killing him. The mother and her child was hurt and remain hospitalized.

Garcia is charged with accident involving serious bodily injury and tampering with physical evidence. ]

The other driver was charged with intoxication manslaughter.
