Cook Children’s & Fort Worth Aim to Reduce Gun Deaths

(WBAP/KLIF) — The leading cause of death among children in trauma centers across the nation is due to firearms. In fact, Cook Children’s has treated 29 patients for gunshot wounds in 2023, two of which have died.

That has prompted the children’s care provider to participate in Gun Safety Awareness Month with their Aim for Safety campaign. Cook Children’s emergency room physician Daniel Guzman says Fort Worth City Councilwoman Jeanette Martinez set forth a new proclamation to establish Gun Safety Awareness Month, making Fort Worth one of four Texas cities recognizing the new awareness month.

Guzman says 1 in 5 North Texas children live in a home where guns are not always safely locked away. The Aim for Safety initiative will host several events, including back-to-school bashes, in order to distribute free gun locks and gun safes.
