AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – With Title-42 set to expire o Thursday, the Federal Government and the State of Texas boosted resources this week at the southern border.
The United States sent 1,500 military troops to help with processing migrants who are seeking asylum. By law, the troops are able to deal strictly with paperwork and other administrative duties.
“The problem with that is, it doesn’t help the border communities that are being overwhelmed,” said Dallas immigration attorney, Eric Cedillo. “There’s not enough help to get people out of the border towns to other places where they can stay.”
Many asylum seekers who are eventually denied are still allowed into the United States while the process plays out.
Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Texas National Guard are continuing to work together to prevent, detect, and interdict transnational criminal behavior between ports of entry.
“Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 371,000 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 27,000 criminal arrests, with more than 25,000 felony charges reported. In the fight against fentanyl, Texas law enforcement has seized over 385 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission,” a statement from Governor Abbott read. “Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Joe Biden’s open border policies.”
Cedillo, and other immigration experts, believe there be an immediate surge of legal migration once Title-42 expires.
