(WBAP/KLIF) — The battle over school choice continues at the 88th Legislative Session in Austin.
Opponents of education savings accounts and school vouchers fear public schools will lose essential funding, while proponents want the ability to choose their children’s school. On Wednesday, Governor Greg Abbott and Bishop Michael Olson of the Fort Worth Catholic Diocese spoke to parents at Nolan Catholic High School advocating for parental rights in education. Olson said access of education should be regarded, instead, as parental rights and indicated he was in favor of school education savings accounts, saying parents should ultimately decide where their children attend school.
The Texas House is considering HB 4340, the house version of a recently passed senate bill allowing up to $8,000 per student for an educational savings account. The governor insisted that public schools would remain fully funded if ESA legislation passes. Abbott also touted Florida’s success in both funding public schools and offering education savings accounts.
