DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Weeks ahead of the start of the school year, local first responders are preparing for the potential of a school shooter scenario.

The Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire Rescue, City of Dallas Office of Emergency Management, Dallas Independent School District and the Dallas ISD Police Department partnered for a routine joint exercise on Wednesday. The exercise focused on a coordinated response in the event of a school shooting.

“Every patrol Officer needs in the back of their minds, to ask themselves, whether its constant or before they go on duty,” said Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia. “If this happens, this is what am I going to do.”

The exercise was held at Thomas A. Edison Middle Learning Center and comes months after the elementary school massacre in Uvalde that left 17 students and 2 teachers dead. State leaders have called the law enforcement response in Uvalde an “abject failure.”
