Suspect in Dallas Salon Shooting had Anxiety Surrounding Asians, according to DPD

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas Police Department announced on Tuesday that the suspect in a shooting at a Salon in Dallas’ Korea Town last week had been arrested.

According to DPD, 36-year-old Jeremy Smith was charged him with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The shooting at Hair World Salon on Royal Lane, near I-35, injured three people. All three are recovering and are expected to be okay.

“The preliminary investigation determined that at about 2:20 pm, seven individuals were inside the Hair World Salon when Smith parked his minivan in a westbound lane of Royal Lane, crossed the street with a .22 caliber rifle, walked into the salon and started shooting,” DPD said in a statement.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said Tuesday that the suspect shot approximately 13 times, then ran back to his car and sped off westbound on Royal Lane. One victim was shot in her right forearm, one was shot in the foot, and another was shot in the lower back. The four other people inside the salon were not injured in the shooting.

Surveillance video collected by detectives showed the suspect’s van had a few identifying factors, including a luggage rack, sticker on lower back windshield, along with faded paint and damage to back lift gate.

During the preliminary investigation, through witness information and the work of our analysts, Police were able to identify the suspect vehicle – a red, 2004 Honda Odyssey, and identified the suspect, Jeremy Smith. According to DPD, Officers patrolled to the address where the vehicle was parked – and noted the vehicle matched the description seen in the surveillance footage. Officers also were able to see the suspect, who matched the victim’s description and the description from the surveillance footage.

On May 16, Dallas Police took Smith into custody on active warrants and brought him to Police Headquarters for questioning. A search warrant was executed on the van – and police seized a handgun, gun magazine and ammunition. Smith was taken to the Dallas County Jail – where his bond was set by a magistrate.

“During our investigation, our Detectives learned that two years ago Smith had a motor-vehicle crash with an Asian male,” said Chief Garcia. “Since this crash, Smith has had panic attacks and illusions when he is around anyone of Asian descent.”

This investigation is ongoing.

Dallas Police also continue to investigate the two additional shootings at Asian run businesses, one in April, another in May. There was a connection between those shootings in that a maroon or red vehicle was driven by an unknown suspect. At this time, there has been no arrest in those cases.
