11 Charged in $300-Million Medicare Fraud Scheme

(WBAP/KLIF) — A $300-million Medicare fraud scheme results in nearly a dozen charged in Texas.

According the U.S. Justice Department, the fraud involved the founders of Unified Laboratory Services, Spectrum Diagnostic Laboratory, and Reliable Labs for paying kickbacks to medical professionals in return for ordering unnecessary lab tests. Paul Madison and David Michael Lizcano both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to pay and receive health care kickbacks and could each spend 15 years in prison.

According to the Fort Worth Star Telegram, the labs billed over $300-million to Medicare and other federal health care programs.
