DFW Based Airlines Plan to Keep Vaccine Mandates in Place, Despite Governor’s Order

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Vaccine requirements for employees at two DFW based airlines aren’t changing, despite Governor Abbott’s ban on vaccine mandates.

An executive order issued by Governor Abbott on Monday bans private businesses from mandating the COVID vaccine for employees. But, both Southwest and American Airlines said on Tuesday that President Biden’s federal vaccine mandate supersedes any conflicting state laws.

“We are reviewing the executive order issued by Governor Abbott, but we believe the federal vaccine mandate supersedes any conflicting state laws, and this does not change anything for American,” American Airlines Spokesperson, Curtis Blessing said.

American Airlines CEO Doug Parker insisted that the company is still working through the details of the federal requirements, but that employees who don’t get the COVID shot won’t be able to work at the airline.

“According to the President’s Executive Order, federal action supersedes any state mandate or law, and we would be expected to comply with the President’s Order to remain compliant as a federal contractor,” a statement from Southwest Airlines said. “We will continue to follow all Orders closely and keep our Employees updated on any potential changes to existing policies.”

Southwest Airlines said Monday that it is also reviewing all guidance issued on the vaccine, and that the company is aware of the recent Order by Governor Abbott.
