COVID-19 on Track to be Leading Cause of Police Deaths for 2nd Year Straight

Undated (WBAP/KLIF) – The leading cause of death for law enforcement so far this year is COVID -19, according to the national Officer Down Memorial Page.  Nationwide, 103 police officers have died of COVID so far this year; COVID was the leading cause of death for law enforcement in 2020.

David Tilley, spokesman for the Plano, TX Police Department says exposure is a problem for officers because of the nature of their job,

“Our officers are placed in situations where we don’t always know exactly what we’re dealing with.”

He says among the small number of cases among plano officers, none have been fatal.

COVID-19 deaths among law enforcement officers in Florida have sky-rocketed in recent weeks. At least 40 officers have died from the virus as Florida has become the epicenter of new infections.

Several departments have lost multiple officers within days of each other, according media reports across Florida. Some officers had not been vaccinated, it’s not known how many.
