AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – The Texas Democratic Party is calling on Senator Ted Cruz to resign from the U.S. Senate following this week’s breach of the U.S. Capitol building.
The party blames the Senator for what it refers to as “inciting treason and sedition” by objecting to electoral college votes and pushing a narrative of promoting alleged election fraud touted by President Trump.
“The American people have spoken, and Joe Biden will be the next president,” said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa. “That is how democracy works. Countless election challenges by Trump and his allies have failed. Democrats, Republicans and independents alike have agreed that our democracy must come before any party, and the United States Congress will soon take the next step of formally ratifying the will of the American people and certifying the election results.”
Hinojosa insisted that Democrats call on Senator Cruz to resign from office immediately.
“Cruz’s actions have undermined our democracy, inspired treasonous, seditious acts, and brought shame to Texas,” Hinojosa said. “The tragic results of his actions will reverberate for generations. By leading the objection to the Electoral College certification, all the while knowing the devastating consequences, he has demonstrated he is not fit to serve in the U.S. Senate.”
Texas Democrats are also calling on the Justice Department to investigate the actions that led to the violence, the role of elected officials, and specifically Ted Cruz’s potential involvement.
The Republican Party of Texas responded to the call from Democrats.
“The Texas Democrat Party is delusional,” said Texas GOP Chair Allen West in a statement posted to Parler. “No one called for Congressional Democrats to step down in their previous opposition to certifying elections or for peddling the absurdity of impeachment and President Trump being a Russian agent. Does the Texas Democrat Party call for Rep. Eric Swalwell to be removed from the House Intelligence Committee? This deranged assertion is why the Texas Democrat Party was resoundingly defeated in the Lone Star State, and will continue to be.”
Senator Cruz hasn’t given any indication he would resign.
