DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The incoming Dallas Police chief will inherit a department facing a continued rise in violent crime.
Retired San Jose, California Police Chief Eddie Garcia laid out his plan and priorities during a virtual round table discussion with reporters on Monday. Chief Garcia said his focus will be to drop a rise in murders that the city has experienced in consecutive years.
“I will take a reduction personally,” Chief Garcia said. “I mean, it’s not just the numbers, it’s the perception of crime. Both the perception and the numbers have to go in a better direction.”
The veteran law enforcement Officer said he’ll rely on the community and rank-and-file to familiarize himself with the city’s challenges.
Chief Garcia takes over the Dallas Police Department in early February. He plans to hire an executive assistant from within the department to assist his adjustment to the city and the department.
Garcia will replace Chief Renee Hall who announced her resignation earlier this year.
