Corpus Christi (WBAP/KLIF) – South Texas is dealing with floods caused by the weekend onslaught of what is now Tropical Storm Hannah. Hannah roared ashore from the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 1 hurricane. The National Hurricane Center says the first hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic cyclone season made landfall twice Saturday afternoon within the span of a little more than an hour, bringing with it powerful wind, drenching rain, and a three to five foot storm surge. Forecasters downgraded Hanna to a tropical storm early Sunday, and say Hannah’s biggest impact will be flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The city of Mission, Texas issued a warning on social media Sunday morning that flooding is occurring there, and it will be several hours before the rain lets up.
The Magic Valley Electric Cooperative says Hannah has dealt a heavy blow to its system, and it will repair the damage, but it’s not safe to do so now. Magic Valley EC warns residents they may face prolonged power outages.
On top of that, the parts of Texas where Hanna came ashore were already severely stressed trying to deal with a still growing surge in coronavirus cases.
