To ‘Make Progress Toward Racial Equality’ Quaker Oats Nixes Aunt Jemima Brand

Undated (WBAP/KLIF) – Quaker Oats will end the name and imaging from an over century old syrup and pancake brand.

in a statement, the company said the move is meant to “make progress toward racial equality,” the company is nixing Aunt Jemima syrup and pancake mix.

The statement also says taht Quaker Oats recognizes that “Aunt Jemima’s origins are based on a racial stereotype.”

The brand, which spans over 120 years, features a black woman named after a character from 19th-century minstrel shows. On the company website says taht Aunt Jemima was first “brought to life” by Nancy Green, who was born a slave in 1834 in Kentucky. She became the face of the product in 1890.

While the character was a “Mammy,” wearing a red bandana, Aunt Jemima’s image changes in 1989 as she was adorned with pearls and curls.

New packaging will roll out this fall, according to NBC News.

All references to the Aunt Jemima syrup and pancake mix have been removed from the Quaker Oats website.
