George Floyd Prompts Arlington PD Policy Change

(WBAP/KLIF) — In the wake of George Floyd’s death, Arlington police are changing their policies.  The unforgettable image of a Minneapolis police officer pressing his knee into the neck of George Floyd continues to disturb Americans.

The restraint method is referred to as the vascular neck restraint and Interim Arlington Police Chief Jaime Ayala is re-categorizing the move as “deadly force”.

Lt. Chris Cook says the department has used the restraint in only two instances over the last five years, but officers are now advised to use the method only when encountering deadly resistance and must have justification for doing so.  Arlington police officers are also required to notify their supervisors if they use the technique.

According to the Dallas Morning News, officers are instructed to only use the method when encountering deadly resistance and when the use can be reasonably justified.
