Denton County Votes to Remove Confederate Memorial

DENTON (WBAP/KLIF NEWS)- As protest for racial injustice continue across the state, Denton County Commissioners voted unanimously on Tuesday to remove and relocate a confederate memorial located in front of the Denton court house on the square to a museum.

“Our collective decision is not one taken lightly. However, in weighing the potential for further harm to our businesses, potential for harm to anyone who might seek to destroy it and the law enforcement resources needed to protect it, we believe relocation is the right step,” said Denton County Judge Andy Eads, “Today, this important step is to preserve both community peace and a piece of history.”

The monument, which reads “Our confederate soldiers” and features a statue depicting a confederate soldier,  was erected over 100 years ago in 1918 and named a Texas historic landmark in the 1970’s.
