DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – North Texans braved long lines on Thursday to receive help from the North Texas Food Bank as the economy continues to feel the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Cars lined up for miles outside Fair Park as box after box of food donations were unloaded off a truck and handed out to anyone down on their luck. Qualifications surrounding the poverty line did exist on an “honor system” basis. Dallas residents said they waited hours but that the help is more than welcome.
“I came up here when my granny told me there was free food,” said one woman.
“We need it, we need it, we need it,” said a Dallas man. “It’s a crisis out here and we all got to stick together.”
Officials with The North Texas Food Bank said contributions from the public are needed more now than ever.
“Our costs have sky rocketed along with the food that’s needed in the community,” NTFB CEO, Trisha Cunningham said.
The food bank handed out more than 6,000 food boxes in just over two hours. More mobile distribution events are planned for the near future.
