Day 5 Guyger Murder Trial: Defense Presents its Case

Amber Guyger shot and killed Botham Jean, an unarmed black man, after entering his apartment, believing that it was her own, according to police.

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — The defense began to present its case Friday in the Murder trial for a former Dallas Police Officer.

Amber Guyger told Police last September that she shot and killed Botham Jean after mistaking his apartment for her own.

When the Murder trial for Amber Guyger resumed after lunch Friday Guyger was no longer testifying.

The defense called neighbors and law enforcement to the stand to testify about the circumstances around the shooting and proper Police training in a burglary scenario.

Several neighbors spoke about consistent issues with the complex about the confusing nature of the complex and issues with unit doors.

After becoming emotional on the stand, Amber Guyger testified about what happened the night of the shooting.

She testified that she heard shuffling inside the apartment and told Jean to put up his hands when she went inside. She said Jean was moving toward her speaking loudly.

“He was yelling hey, hey, hey,” Guyger testified.

She was asked why she chose to fire her weapon.

“I was scared that whoever was inside that apartment was going to kill me.”

Guyger was on the stand until around 12 p.m. when the Judge broke for lunch.

UPDATE 10:01AM

As its first witness, the defense called Amber Guyger to the stand.
Guyger was asked about her sexual relationship with her former Police partner Martin Rivera. Guyger testified that the relationship was on and off because Rivera was married.
“I knew it was morally wrong,” said Guyger. “I didn’t want to hurt anybody and I knew it was going to go anywhere.”
Guyger said she exchanged flirtatious texts the day of the shooting with Rivera. The prosecution pointed out in its case that both Guyger and Rivera deleted texted messages between each other after the shooting.
