On Thursday, July 18, 2019, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Fort Worth Police Department West Division Patrol Officers responded to a person with a weapon call in the apartment complex at 2900 Broadmoor Drive. After a short search, the officers were directed to an apartment on the third floor by a victim leaving with a child. Officers approached the apartment where they confronted 19-year-old Markevvion Devonte Cannon, inside the apartment holding hostages as human shields. The hostages were a 12- year-old girl, 15-year-old boy, and a 19-year-old girl; the hostages are not related to Cannon.
Police say During this time Cannon displayed a handgun leading officers to get helmets, ballistic shields, and additional body armor as they continued to engage with Cannon, and attempt to reach a peaceful conclusion. During the encounter, Cannon used a handgun and fired several rounds at the officers, striking the ballistic shield. Due to the close proximity of the children, the officers did not engage with deadly force. They evacuated the surrounding area and called for SWAT backup.
Police say Cannon repeatedly fired his handgun from the third floor apartment window at officers, pinning one officer behind a patrol car. Hostage Negotiators attempted to communicate with Cannon as he barricaded the door of the apartment to prevent officers’ entry.
“Fearing for the lives of the hostages, SWAT officers developed a hostage rescue plan and entered the apartment. They observed Cannon with the handgun in the master bedroom closet with the hostages, seated on the floor. Cannon failed to comply with the officers’ orders to surrender and raised his weapon. One Fort Worth SWAT officer, a nine-year veteran, fired one shot, striking Cannon. The officer was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol,” a release from the Fort Worth Police Department stated.
After removing the hostages, officers immediately provided medical support for Cannon and called for an ambulance. Cannon was transported to JPS Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Major Case investigators made the scene and are conducting an investigation; no officers or people were hurt.
Cannon was at the apartment to visit his ex-girlfriend and infant child they share together. However, there was an active warrant for Cannons arrest for Assault Bodily Injury Family Member/Previous Conviction in which his ex-girlfriend was the reported victim on May 21, 2019. This warrant also included an emergency protective order request to prevent Cannon from further contacting his ex-girlfriend. An altercation ensued, which led to the resulting call for police service.
