DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas residents elected the city’s new Mayor Saturday night after months of debate and a runoff for the position.
State Representative Eric Johnson defeated Dallas City Councilman Scott Griggs with 55% of the vote. Johnson got off to an early start after early voting numbers showed him ahead by 12 percentage points that Griggs could never make up.
“I really have to say that this campaign literally would not have been successful without all of the volunteers,” said Johnson during his victory speech. “Everyone who worked so hard for no pay at all.”
Johnson, who grew up in Dallas, will officially become Mayor later this month when Mayor Mike Rawlings leaves office after eight years.
In a high profile Dallas City council race David Blewett defeated Phillip Kingston with 53% of the total, compared to Kingston’s 46% of voters.
