(WBAP/KLIF) – Many North Texas cities are notifying residents that red light cameras are being turned off, following Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to sign a bill banning the cameras into law.

The law takes effect September 1, but many municipalities are cutting ties with the camera now. A popular red light camera vendor is allowing cities in the middle of a contract to terminate the contract now that the proposal has become law.

“The removal of the red light cameras will not impact our efforts to protect Southlake,” notes Southlake Police Chief James Brandon. “We will continue with our work to keep our intersections as safe as possible. Our Traffic and Patrol Divisions work diligently every day to help ensure the traveling public in Southlake reaches their destinations safely.”

Many North Texas Police department’s said Monday that any cases currently in the cue will be dismissed, but previous citations won’t be overturned or refunded.
