DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Time is running out for anyone wishing to place a bid on a Confederate statue removed from a Dallas park nearly 18 months ago.
The City Council voted to have the Robert E. Lee statue removed from Oak Lawn Park, formerly Lee Park, in 2017. It has sat in a storage facility ever since. Earlier this spring, the same City Council voted to sell the piece at auction for no less than $450,000. The minimum dollar amount was set to allow the city to recoup the money it spend to take the statue down.
The deadline to bid is June 5.
According to the LSO Auctions Website, four bids have been place on the statue by two bidders. As of Friday morning the highest bid was $502,500. It tops previous bids of $450,000, $499,000, and $500,000.
The auction website indicates the deadline could be extended.
The auction comes while the City of Dallas is looking to find a vendor to remove another Confederate monument from Pioneer Park in downtown.
