DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The controversial President of Brazil was met with opposition in Dallas Thursday while speaking to a chapter of the World Affairs Council.
The Dallas trip for Jair Bolsonaro comes just weeks after he canceled an event in New York following backlash from LGBTQ groups and Mayor Bill DeBlasio.
Bolsonaro was greeted outside the old Parkland Hospital building by activists opposing his anti-LGBTQ comments and far right politics.
“Welcoming Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to Dallas this week will revive the ‘City of Hate’ appellation that we have worked so long to overcome,” said Mark York, Executive Financial Secretary of the Dallas AFL-CIO. “After his opponents were jailed, the ‘Tropical Trump’ viciously attacked indigenous people, gays, and, especially, working families.”
A group of supporters was also on hand with Brazilian flags and t-shirts.
“We welcome him,” said one Bolsonaro supporter. “I feel like we live in a democratic world where all ideas should be welcome.”
The World Affairs council claims Bolsonaro was invited to speak because of his leadership position but not his politics. His trip to Texas comes amid protests in his own country over education cuts.
