AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) — The controversial red light cameras are one step closer to being a thing of the past in Texas.
A bill in the Texas House that would force cities to do away with the cameras over the next several years has overwhelmingly passed a preliminary vote, with the final vote likely coming Wednesday.
Supporters of the bill call the cameras unconstitutional. Supporters of the cameras say they save lives.
The state could lose anywhere from $22 million to $28 million in revenue over the next couple of years, but legislators say that money can be made up by adjusting other traffic fines.
The bill will go to the Texas Senate once it gets final House approval.
