FRISCO (WBAP/KLIF) – A local fire department is prepared to administer blood transfusions on the scene of an emergency.
According to the Frisco Fire Department, paramedics in Frisco are the first in North Texas with the ability to administer blood products to critical patients in the field. In conjunction with Medical City Plano, paramedics can delivers life saving transfusions to patients before arriving at a hospital.
“Prior to today, patients who needed blood were completely dependent on how fast we could get them to a hospital,” said Dr. Mark Gamber, DO, Frisco Fire Department Medical Director. “Now with early transfusion for severe blood loss, Frisco Fire will give critically ill patients a better chance at survival.”
One Frisco Fire Department vehicle will carry blood products in an on-board refrigerator with the capability to utilize a warmer to bring blood to the appropriate temperature to administer. Paramedics have received additional training on how to administer blood products in a non-hospital setting.
