Southwest to Allow Miniature Horses On Board as Service Animals

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — As airlines are tightening restrictions on service animals nationwide, Dallas-based Southwest is adding one to its list: miniature horses.

This after the company shortened that list to just dogs and cats after a service dog bit a passenger earlier this year.

Miniature horses are recognized as service animals by the American with Disabilities Act. While not the size of regular horses, they are still typically larger and stronger than most dogs.

Southwest says passengers with one will have to assure them that the animal is indeed there for service purposes. They will only be allowed to bring one service animal on-board, and the animal must be kept on a leash at all times.

The new restrictions begin September 17.
