ITALY (WBAP/KLIF News) – One student was injured after being shot at Italy High School Monday morning.

Authorities said the victim was a 15-year-old girl and the suspect, a 16-year-old boy, currently in police custody.

The girl was transported to Parkland Hospital and her condition is unknown.

The shooting occurred just before 8 a.m. and Italy ISD Superintendent Lee Joffre said administrators had to think quickly to keep students safe.

“This morning when the administration became aware that we had an active shooter situation on campus. The school district immediately took action to get our students in a safe position,” he said.

Joffre said administrators will do everything they can to help students cope with the tragedy.

“This is a trying time for our community and our school. We have counselors throughout the Region 10 area that are coming to assist us,” he said.

Both Italy High School and Stafford Elementary were put on lock down.

The district texted parents that there was an active shooter situation with students at the high school being transported to Stafford Elementary School.

Shortly after 11 a.m., parents were able to reunite with their children at the elementary school.

Italy is about 45 minutes South of Dallas.
