Farmers Branch (WBAP/KLIF) – A routine traffic stop in Farmers Branch Tuesday night turned into a deadly shootout between the responding police officer and a passenger in the car.
The Farmers Branch Police Department’s Kris Garrett said as the officer approached the driver, a woman in the car, identified as 38-year-old Brook Camacho, allegedly fired at the officer after he asked her to exit the car.
“The passenger stepped out and shortly there after shot the officer in the chest,” he said.
Garrett said the officer fired back.
Camacho was injured during the exchange and was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died.
“So, there still going over video footage of the incident and working with the D.A’s office with the investigation,” he said.
The officer was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.
Garrett said the officer’s life was likely saved by the bullet proof vest he was wearing.
The driver was questioned by police and released.
