Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez Resigns, Announces Bid for Governor

Dallas, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez resigned Wednesday afternoon and officially filed the paperwork to run for governor.

Valdez was in Austin for the announcement that she’s running on the Democratic ticket.

“I am blessed to have found the courage and the strength of often the help from others that was needed to help me go beyond my humble beginnings,” she said.

In front of a crowd of supporters and the media, Valdez said she’s running to better serve the Texas community.

“I am stepping up. EstoyObligada. For Texas…for everyone…I’m in,” she said.

Her decision to run triggered an automatic resignation as sheriff, per the Texas constitution. That means there will be a special election to replace her would happen next year.

Valdez has been the sheriff since 2004.

During an interview this week with Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins — a fellow Democrat — he said, as sheriff, Valdez is credited with bringing the county jail into compliance with state standards.

Jenkins says that Valdez has also changed some negative perceptions about Dallas.

“She been part of the team here in Dallas County that has changed kind of the perception of the area, as a city of hate by some to a place of reason and compassion.”

The Dallas County Commissioners will appoint an interim sheriff until one can be voted on.
