FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) – The Fort Worth shelter for Hurricane Harvey evacuees is closed after being open for more than three weeks.
At its peak, the shelter was home to 247 evacuees, many of whom are choosing to relocate to the Fort Worth area.
“There were 14 households that were at the shelter that did not get on the bus to go back because they’ve chosen to relocate,” said Whitney Rodriguez with Fort Worth Parks and Recreation.
Catholic Charities will provide hotel stays for those families until FEMA vouchers are provided. FWISD will provide transportation to school-age children until families are placed in permanent housing. 24 people are going home on a bus and planning on returning once they gather their belongings. Those families will be connected with a Catholic Charities case manager when they return to North Texas.
While the shelter was open red cross volunteers logged more than 9,000 hours. Salvation Army provided meals to shelter guests. Citizen Emergency Response Team volunteers logged 2,590 hours, spread among 10 agencies. The shelter was open for a total of 22 days.
