DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — The number of Hurricane Harvey evacuees at the Dallas mega-shelter has dropped from nearly 4,000 to triple digits in just a matter of days.
On Saturday, the city said there were 3,821 evacuees at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. But as of Wednesday morning, that number was down to more than 700, according to the Red Cross, after buses have been sporadically taking evacuees back to their homes.
“People are still in good spirits and really planning and looking ahead to what their next steps are,” said Renee Felton of the Red Cross.
Felton said many have decided to relocate and find work in the Metroplex, and that there is no timetable on how long the shelter will remain open.
When the shelter opened at the beginning of the month, the City of Dallas said they planned on being open for three weeks, but added they’d keep it open as long as it takes for evacuees to get back on their feet.
“It’s pretty amazing to see people who have been through what they’ve been through,” Felton said, “who are resilient and ready to move on and start their lives from this point forward.”
