Crane Set to Remove Dallas Confederate Statue Involved in Fatal Crash

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — An accident involving an 18-wheeler and the crane set to remove the Robert E. Lee statue in Dallas’ Lee park has left one man dead.

The city brought the crane up from Houston after attempts to remove the statue last week were unsuccessful. They had originally used a crane that was too small.

Around 7:45 Sunday night, Dallas Police say the crane was turning left onto Linfield Road from SM Wright Freeway, when an 18-wheeler ran a red light and crashed into it. The truck driver was killed, but the crane operator was unharmed.

City Manager T.C Broadnax says because of the crash, they’re not focused on when they’ll remove the statue.

“Unfortunately someone lost their life, so that’s what we’re focused on,” Broadnax said. “Again, I want to send our condolences to the family.”

As of early Monday morning, there’s no timetable on when they will resume taking down the statue.
