Dallas Set to Open Mega-Shelter in Convention Center for Storm Evacuees

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Dallas is preparing to open up the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center for South Texas evacuees on Tuesday.

The city opened three shelters over the weekend, all at local rec centers: Walnut Hill, Tommie Allen, and Samuel Grand. The first two filled their 300-person capacity within days.

The Red Cross is anticipating the third will also reach that number by tomorrow.

The convention center will be set to host about 5,000 evacuees — they plan on using the garage level, meaning no already-scheduled events will be affected.

Each of the shelters provides food, water, cots, showers, and a small number of laptops. The Red Cross is also providing counseling for evacuees who are emotionally shaken by the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.
