Fort Worth Officially Votes Not to Join Sanctuary Cities Lawsuit

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) — The City of Fort Worth has now officially decided not to join a statewide lawsuit fighting the anti-sanctuary cities law.

The vote came early Wednesday morning after hours of speakers at Tuesday night’s city council meeting. The final tally was 5-4 against joining the suit, with Mayor Betsy Price as one of those five.

The four city council-members who were in favor of joining the lawsuit were Carlos Flores, Ann Zadeh, Gyna Bivens, and Kelly Allen Gray.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the meeting then got heated, with supporters of the lawsuit chanting “shut down the floor” and police having to escort many of them out. Protesters also called council-members racist.

The vote leaves Fort Worth as the biggest Texas city to not join the suit, which includes Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and El Paso.

The law allows police officers to ask people about their immigration status at routine traffic stops and is set to go into effect September 1st.
