DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Texas lawmakers are one step closer to putting more money into schools and retired teachers.
The Texas Senate approved House Bill 21 early Tuesday morning, which would put about $350 million into schools and another $210 million into helping retired teachers with their rising health care costs.
The House, however, wants to put even more money into education. State representatives want to use the entire $800 million allotted by doing some financial gymnastics with deferred Medicaid payments, rather than just a portion as proposed by the Senate.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said in a statement he’s proud of the Senate for looking out for the state’s teachers and schools.
Legislators have until midnight Wednesday, which is when the special session ends, to come to an agreement.
