DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott is defending his texting while driving ban one day after signing the legislation into law. Abbott said he’s for limited government, but the ban was needed.
“Studies have shown that if you are texting while driving, you are far more dangerous than if you are under the influence of alcohol,” said Abbott.
According the the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving is responsible for the deaths 3,477 people in 2015.
Abbot says he is not totally satisfied with the current bill, which is why he looks forward to it being addressed in the special session starting July 18th.
“What I wanted was to make sure we had a preemption of all of these multitude of local regulations on using a phone in a vehicle, and I want to make sure all those are overwritten by this one statewide ban,” said Abbott.
