I have been meditating for the past seven years and most of the time its like clock work. I initially started meditating to calm down from work and basic life stress.
I made it a point to turn my living space into a true sanctuary no matter what city I was living in. However, the recent death of someone very close to me turned my world upside down and meditation took on a new meaning for me.
I watched this person fight cancer like the warrior that he was for as long as he could before he crossed over. I needed meditation more than ever but for some reason I just couldn’t find my center. I couldn’t quiet my mind.
Dealing with trauma is something that all human beings will go through in varying degrees. It’s inescapable. It was only when I realized that our bodies and minds were built to handle these things did I finally start to calm down. I knew that, in time, everything would be okay.
The physical manifestations of grief and anxiety were occurring less frequently and I was starting to enjoy deep mediation again. I got rid of items that reminded me of the worst moments of the past year and decided to create a new sanctuary space in my home.
To help me on my journey back, I purchased a few things to help create as calm an environment as possible. I was immediately attracted to the soft glow of the Himalayan salt lamps.
It creates a spa-like setting in any room and also ionizes the air. If you’re like me and find it difficult to fall asleep, these lamps are a good investment.
I also love to burn incense when I am ready to wind down. Nag Champa is a sacred Indian incense or oil that is said to purify any space. The scent has a calming effect that is vital for meditation.
The combination of the ambient lighting from the salt lamp and the intoxicating smell from the Nag Champa is pure bliss.
Whether it’s a soothing bath, a gorgeous candle or your grandmother’s blanket; creating a calm sanctuary space is key for restoring balance to your well being.
My sanctuary space got me through a difficult time and I am sure it can work for you.
